I whipped this recipe up for dinner on a Friday night for a couple of friends and they loved it. They thought it tasted like hamburger helper, which is why I gave it the name that I did. It is a beautiful combination of sweet and salty with with lots of onion and garlic. Enjoy!

Servings 8

  • 1-2 tbs coconut oil or other cooking oil
  • 2-3 medium onions sliced
  • 1 1/2 lb ground garlic sausage or ground beef not in a casing
  • 1 tbs onion powder
  • 1 tbs garlic powder can also use fresh minced garlic
  • 1 can full fat coconut milk 15 oz
  • 1/4 c . coconut aminos
  • 1/3 c . water
  • 2-3 tbs arrowroot starch
  • sea salt
  • white ground pepper
  • cooked spaghetti squash cauliflower rice, veggie noodles, or medium of choice for serving

  1. In a large saute or nonstick skillet heat the oil. If using a stainless steel pan, heat the pan first to get nice and hot then add the oil, melt, and evenly distribute to coat the bottom of the pan. Once the oil is hot add the sliced onions and saute until translucent or golden brown.
  2. Add the sausage or beef to the pan and cook all the way through until no pink remains.
  3. Season the sausage onion mixture with onion powder and garlic powder and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the coconut milk and coconut aminos to the pan and stir in thoroughly. Bring the liquid mixture to a roaring simmer.
  5. Meanwhile prepare the arrowroot slurry by mixing the arrowroot starch into the slurry.
  6. Once the liquid reaches a roaring simmer, slowly whisk in the slurry until a thick gravy like sauce results. All of the slurry may not be needed. Mix more slurry if needed and whisk into the sauce until the correct texture results.
  7. Season to taste with salt and white pepper.
  8. Serve over cooked spaghetti squash, cauliflower rice, veggie noodles, or medium of choice

Recipe Notes

I served this over spaghetti squash with broccoli on the side.
